Sector Collaboration - Textile Sector

Introduction

The textile sector offers significant potential for industrial HTHPs, particularly in heat-intensive processes such as washing, dyeing, drying and finishing. Its value chain is highly fragmented and globally distributed, with much of the manufacturing concentrated in Asia. Global brands increasingly drive decarbonisation efforts, while many production facilities are operated by SMEs with limited investment capacity and narrow profit margins.

Key stakeholders include textile manufacturers, international brands, technology suppliers, engineering consultants, policymakers, financial institutions and research organisations. Conventional production commonly relies on fossil-fuel-fired steam systems, while facilities are often constrained by legacy equipment, limited space, insufficient grid capacity and carbon-intensive electricity. Further barriers include high electricity prices, limited local expertise and a lack of full-scale sector-specific demonstration projects.

HTHPs can help electrify textile process heating by recovering and upgrading waste heat for hot-water and steam-based applications. Promising opportunities include integration into drying, washing and dyeing processes, supported by renewable electricity, process-integration studies and adapted retrofit concepts. Cooperation across the global value chain is essential to reduce investment risks, build technical capacity and accelerate deployment throughout textile-producing regions.
