Research work related to IoT and heat pumps:
AIT Austrian Institute of Technology GmbH, Center for Energy
AIT has longstanding experience in the field of heat pump research on component and system level for both household and industrial applications. The increasing spread of digitalization will enable heat pumps, equipped with electronics, software, sensors and network connectivity, to participate in the internet of things (IoT) The ability to collect and exchange data and make use of it wisely will open new potentials for optimization, flexibility and energy efficiency. AIT is therefore active in several research projects focusing on different aspects of IoT and heat pumps, such as:
- economic use of flexibility of remotely controllable prosumer components such as heat pumps, boilers, PV storage systems and e-mobility for selected system-serving services, such as marketing on spot and balancing energy markets and minimizing balancing energy
- online, predictive and holistic, reconfigurable control for industrial energy supply systems, which enables the integration of renewable energies (use of energy storage, flexible consumers for electricity networks with dynamic tariffs, efficiency through optimum control of the entire system, utilization of waste heat by using high temperature heat pumps)
- digital twin of the heat pump for performance tests based on a Modelica model of a heat pump linked as a Functional Mockup Unit (FMU) with the real data of the test to form a digital twin, adaptive identification of model parameters and model calibration
- developing of data and process models for heat pumps and other HVAC components to be included in BIM (building information modeling)
TU Wien, Institute of Computer Engineering, Automation Systems Group
The Automation Systems Group at the Institute of Computer Engineering at TU Wien concentrates on concepts for the system integration of distributed automation systems with a strong focus on building automation and control systems. The creation of generic information models is as important as the secure access to their databases via middleware solutions (web services).
University of Applied Sciences Burgenland, Center for Building Technologies
University of Applied Sciences Burgenland has many years of experience in the development of integral system solutions for the energy supply of buildings. A major research focus is the implementation of the EU decarbonization strategy by means of renewable energy systems, sector coupling, storage and IoT technologies. University of Applied Sciences Burgenland is researching grid-serving system solutions and business models in more than 30 R&D projects, some of which are also based on WP technologies, and has know-how in the execution of laboratory experiments, the development of intelligent monitoring systems (automatic fault detection, post commissioning evaluation, model based energy evaluation, BIM integration and digital twin, etc.), development of cross-building control and automation systems incl. integration of IoT sensors. It has a comprehensive laboratory infrastructure with the full-scale research building Energetikum for the integration and development of smart IoT services.
Institute of Technology Assessment of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ITA ÖAW)
The research of the Institute of Technology Assessment of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ITA ÖAW) deals with the impacts of new technologies on society, the environment and the economy. One of its focus areas is digitalisation, where the impacts of increased connectivity and technological interdependence are assessed. Within this project, the main focus is on cybersecurity and privacy as well as the impact of new applications and business models on different stakeholders.
