Heat Pumps for Process Heating and Cooling

Integration of large-scale heat pumps for heating and cooling of industrial processes is an effective measure to increase energy efficiency and decarbonize the processes and thereby improve the competitiveness of the industry. The heat pump often replaces combustion of fossil fuels or sometimes biofuels.

Very good efficiencies can be obtained if the same heat pump can be used to fullfil both a heating need and a cooling need at the same time.

Industrial processes often need heat supply at higher temperatures compared to the building sectors. High-temperature heat pumps which deliver heat up to 100°C have been around for a long time, while heat pumps delivering higher temperatures are under development. For the temperature range just above 100°C prototypes, demonstrators and even early products are already available. Within soon future, high-temperature heat pumps up to 200°C will most likely be available.
