Heat Pumps for Commercial and Institutional Buildings

Heat pumps are well suited for heating commercial and institutional buildings, and this application is getting more and more common. In buildings that have a heating and cooling demand, either at the same time or during different parts of the year, very good energy- and cost-efficient operation can be reached by heat pumps.

The heat pump can either heat and cool the air directly (ducted or non-ducted) or the water in the distribution system for space heating and cooling. The most common heat pumps in commercial and institutional buildings are:

  • Air-to-water heat pumps – some extract heat from the outdoor air, some from the exhaust air
  • Liquid/water-to-water heat pumps – often used to extract heat from the ground
  • Air-to-air heat pumps
  • Liquid/water-to-air heat pumps

There are many possibilities for different types of system configurations for heat pumps in commercial and institutional buildings and many heat pumps can be used for heating and cooling.
