The heat pump research program of the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE)
supports projects for improvement of components and cycles, introduction of natural working
fluids, screening for and improvement of heat sources including combination of heat pumps
and solar energy and establishing methods and field tests for estimation of COP. The paper
gives an overview of research projects which are supported by state budget, supplementing
the papers which were presented at the previous IEA Heat Pump Conferences in Zürich
(2008) and Las Vegas (2005) [Kopp 2005 and 2008]. The annual governmental support for
research in heat pump application has unfortunately decreased to around 0.6 million Swiss
Francs. At the moment, around 15 projects are running which are additionally financed by
industry and other institutions with around 1.3 million Swiss Francs per year.
