REACHING THE KYOTO TARGETS BY A WIDE INTRODUCTION OF GROUND SOURCE HEAT PUMPS PART ΙΙ: APPLYING THE METHODOLOGY ON AVAILABLE STATISTICS IN THE EUROPEAN UNION

The energy required for heating in the EU has been estimated at 40% of total energy demand. A shift of this segment to include a considerable share of RES requires a major change of energy policies on all levels. In order to reach full acceptance of the positive contribution of this technology towards the reduction of energy demand and related emissions the effect of a widespread use of heat pumps on national energy balances has to be calculated. Such an approach requires a comprehensive yet detailed statistical base in order to convince politicians and other relevant stakeholders. This paper discusses the availability of required data and applies the methodology from Part ? to ground source heat pumps as sub-set of heat pump technology. As a result, ground source heat pumps can contribute considerably to the Kyoto targets, lead to savings in the use of primary energy and increase the share of renewables used in the EU-25 states.
