OPTIMIZED HEAT PUMP DESIGN FOR GCC COUNTRIES, PART I: ALGORITHM


A general component-based model of an air cooled chiller is developed to be used as the modelling tool for optimal design of GCC specific equipment. Each component is modeled from first principles and/or empirical relations selected to be valid over a wide range of operating conditions, speed and load. The components include a two stage intercooled screw compressor, shell-and-tube evaporator and air cooled fined tube condenser with
R134a as refrigerant. The component-based model predicts COP of a particular design given cooling load and conditions. A performance map generated by the plant model is embedded in the objective function of an optimization problem that determines the optimal combination
of sub-cooling fraction for any load and operating condition by grid search method.
