In Europe, installation of heat pumps started after the second oil price shock in 1979, since when market development has seen many ups and downs. Nowadays, stable and growing markets have been established, and the acceptance of heat pumps as RES devices by the EU has contributed to positive market development. The number of European countries
in which heat pumps are the favourite heating system for new buildings is increasing, with heat pumps even dominating in retrofit applications in a few countries. Other countries are following this development, with the result that heat pumps in the building sector are becoming the key technology for achieving the 20/20/20 target of the EU, as well as for a possible realisation of the Blue Map scenario developed by the IEA for limiting global temperature rise to 2 K.
