Background

Today, many private homes in temperate zones are heated by fossil fuels, and cooling demand is expected to rise in warmer climates. To phase out fossil fuels and meet this growing demand, a large number of heat pumps and air conditioning units will need to be deployed. Miniaturized components can reduce cost, lower environmental impact, and reduce flammability risks by using less refrigerant while maintaining or improving efficiency.

Objective

Develop knowledge and technologies to enable enhanced miniaturized components and systems for heat pumps, air conditioning, and refrigeration that are cost-effective, environmentally friendly, safe, and efficient.

Activities

  • Research and develop miniaturized heat pump components (compressors, heat exchangers, expansion devices).
  • Optimize refrigerant distribution and system integration for compact designs.
  • Evaluate materials and manufacturing methods to reduce environmental impact and cost.
  • Assess safety, flammability risks, and performance improvements.
