Electric Heat Pumps for Retrofit in Existing Small Residential Buildings (Hydronic Systems) – National Position Paper – Austria

At its Fourth Meeting in Graz, May 1984, the Steering Committee of the IEA Heat Pump Centre decided to organize a Workshop on "Electric Heat Pumps for Retrofit in Small Existing Residential Buildings". This Workshop is to be held in Graz, May 29 to 31, 1985. It is aimed at defining specific criteria which heating-only heat pumps must meet in order to be successful in the retrofit market of the individual countries participating in the IEA Heat Pump Centre. The purpose of this National Position Paper is to supply the Workshop with the relevant facts for Austria. As far as available, these data were collected from literature; other data had to be estimated. Basic data on climate, building stock, thermal insulation, heating systems in use, retrofit systems, as well as data on energy prices, investment cost and economic criteria are given. The status of heat pump systems development and heat pump application is described. In the main part of the paper, the retrofit market for small, electric heat pumps is described and classified into twenty-two market segments, of which four key market segments are emphasized:- single- and two-family houses equipped with hydronic systems, using oil-fired boiler;- single- and two-family houses heated by oil-fired stoves. Of these key market segments, a more detailed description including data on heat and energy consumption for space heating and hot tap water is given. For the case of hydronic distribution systems, several flow sheets and control systems commonly in use are illustrated and described.
