Engine-driven Heat Pumps Analysis of Existing Systems

Over 1000 engine-driven heat pumps (GHPs) have been installed in the member countries of the IEA Heat Pump Center. To gather the experience gained with these systems the member countries of the IEA Heat Pump Center commissioned an investigation of existing GHP installations. The eight systems analyzed in this report are located in Germany which has the largest number of GHPs in operation. An application of the analysis results will help reduce installation and operating costs for future plants and ultimately improve their economics and their market penetration. The systems range in heating capacity from 20 kW to 3 MW. One of the systems is used in an industrial drying and cooling application while another is intended for residential use. The other six systems are being used in the municipal buildings sector.
