IEA HPT Project 65 publishes Task 2 report: State-of-the-art circular economy practices and research in domestic heat pumps

02 Oct 2025

IEA HPT Project 65 has published its Task 2 report, which explores the practical application and research into circular economy principles in the domestic heat pump sector. This new report brings together experiences from Denmark, Germany, Italy, and France, and examines real-world strategies such as take-back systems, project on digital product passport, and business models like heat-as-a-service.

The report highlights how manufacturers and researchers are developing systems to recover materials from end-of-life heat pumps, improve traceability through digitalization, and collaborate across the value chain. It also summarizes the latest regulatory developments and research projects in this area. Although the heat pump industry is still early in its transition to a circular economy, Task 2 shows that progress is under way, supported by new partnerships, policies, and innovative solutions.
