IEA HPT Project 61 has been presented by an evaluation of different grid configuration for heat pump integration in Districts at the Smart Energy Systems Conference 2025, which took place in Copenhagen on Sept. 16-19, 2025. Fabian Ochs of the UIBK University of innsbruck presented an evaluation of four grid typologies, which have been evaluated by an annual energy balance and a cost comparison in collaboration the SIZ Energieplus in Germnay and the OST in Switzerland. Results confirm, that depending on the boundary conditions of the district, the configuration has to be carefully selected. Due to reduced losses, decentralised heat pumps may outperformed centralised systems, which also often run on higher grid temperatures. The investigation shall be further extended to derive a work flow for district integration of heat pumps.
