Safety with Flammable Refrigerants Annex 64 – to Be Highlighted at Chillventa Congress 2024

The International Energy Agency’s (IEA) Heat Pumping Technologies (HPT) Annex 64, focused on “Safety with Flammable Refrigerants,” will host a seminar at the Chillventa Congress to be held from October 7 to 10, 2024, in Nuremberg, Germany. The seminar will delve into the safety aspects and strategies for using flammable refrigerants in heat pumps, featuring insights from global experts and ongoing research.

The following presentations will be given during the seminar:

·October 7, 2024 (13:25 – 13:40 Room Kiew, NCC Ost, Level 2):
Safety with Flammable Refrigerants – IEA HPT Annex 64 Presentation
Speaker: Björn Palm (KTH Royal Institute of Technology)
This presentation will cover the ongoing work within IEA HPT Annex 64, focusing
on safety considerations when using flammable refrigerants in heat pump
systems.

·October 7, 2024 (13:40 – 14:00 Room Kiew, NCC Ost, Level 2):
Consequences and Prospects of the Broad Use of R-290 in Heat Pumps in
Germany
Speaker: Thore Oltersdorf (Fraunhofer-Institut für Solare
Energiesysteme ISE)
This session will explore the widespread use of R-290 (propane) in heat pumps
across Germany, discussing safety concepts and developments for multi-story
buildings.

·October 7, 2024 (14:00 – 14:20 Room Kiew, NCC Ost, Level 2):
Methods for Refrigerant Charge Determination in Residential Heat Pumps –
IEA HPT Annex 64 Presentation
Speaker: Odile Cauret (EDF / Mines Paris)
This presentation will highlight research results from a PhD thesis
collaboration between EDF and Mines Paris, discussing refrigerant charge
determination methods in residential heat pumps.

·October 7, 2024 (14:20 – 14:40 Room Kiew, NCC Ost, Level 2):
Overview of Flammable Refrigerants Research in the United States
Speakers: Kashif Nawaz (Oak Ridge National Laboratory) &
Xudong Wang
This presentation will provide an overview of recent collaborative research
efforts in the U.S. on flammable refrigerants and outline future plans.

·October 7, 2024 (14:40 – 15:00 Room Kiew, NCC Ost, Level 2):
Strategies for Refrigerant Charge Reduction in Heat Pumps Using Flammable
Refrigerants
Speaker: Minkyu Jung (Chung-Ang University)
Charge reduction is crucial when using flammable refrigerants like R-290
(propane). This session will discuss various strategies for reducing
refrigerant charge in heat pump systems.

The seminar offers a unique opportunity to learn about the latest
innovations and safety measures for using flammable refrigerants, especially in
the context of transitioning towards low-GWP (Global Warming Potential)
solutions in heat pump technology. For more information and a complete schedule, visit the Chillventa Congress website.
