The IEA Heat Pump Programme provides information and establishes strategic partnerships to support the development and the adoption of heat pumping technologies including heat pumps, refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Heat pumping technologies are very attractive as they can provide significant reductions in energy consumption and GHG emissions in the building and industry sectors. With a market share of 30% in the building sector, heat pumps can reduce emissions by approximately 10% and even more with new developments. Though commercially available and economically viable in many applications, their adoption is still limited due mainly to their high initial costs and to the lack of awareness of decision-makers. The HPP is well positioned and structured to play a major role in the expansion of the heat pump market, in order to reach substantial energy and environmental impacts.
