Heat pumping technology is used, to more or less extent, in many different applications, on different markets and in different countries.

The applications most well known to most people is the fridge and the freezer in our kitchens, where heat is pumped out of the internal space of those appliances in order to keep the food fresh. Another well know application is air conditioning of cars, where heat is pumped out of the internal space of the car during hot days.

However, heat pumping technology is used in many other applications as well, such as heating and cooling of buildings, providing domestic hot water but also to heat and cool process streams in industries or in district heating or cooling networks.

The exploitation of heat pumping technology on different markets and in various countries depends on different factors such as, for example, climate. For example air source heat pumps might be more common on markets with milder climate compared to colder ones.

How does a heat pump work?

To implement a heat pump cycle the following items are required: a high temperature heat exchanger, a low temperature heat exchanger and a heat transfer medium that transports heat from the low temperature source to the high temperature sink.
